Kalaram Mandir- An Iconic Hindu Temple by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
Located in the Maharatsra state of Western India, Nashik is one of the most frequented religious tourist destinations in the country. Steeped in history and culture, this relatively small yet quite amazing town in Maharastra attracts many a sightseeing traveler. Many followers of Hinduism both local and foreign travel to Nashik in order to pay homage to various gods and deities related to Hiduism as several temples can be found here.
Offering transport links to some of the most popular religious destinations in the region, Nashik provides access to places such as the residence of Sai Baba, Shirdi located in Amrit, the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in Triambakeshwar and also the Kalaram Mandir which is located in Nashik itself.
Situated in the area known as Panchavati in Nashik, the Kalaram Mandir was built in 1790 and was dedicated to Lord Rama. This amazing temple is not only one of the most fascinating temples in Nashik but is also a symbol of religious devotion and obeisance. Although the temple appears to be quite simple in its design compared to other temples in the region, Kalaram Mandir is among the largest.
Lord Rama is believed to be enshrined within a stark black idol made of stone which is why the temple is also known as the Temple of the Black Rama. Other idols which can be spotted at the temple include that of Lord Lakshmana, which are similarly dark in color and decorated with various ornamental garlands.
The construction project of the temple is said to have been one which demanded the dedicated services of more than 2000 workers who sacrificed countless hours to complete this massive project. It took an estimated 12 years to construct the temple which is approximately 70 feet tall. The very top of the dome of the temple is crowned with a gold-plated peak which glistens in the sun.
