Can kosher Mezuzah scrolls cost $1?
Hello i just went to ebay and i look for mezuzah scrolls and i found alot of $1 dollar kosher mezuzah scrolls so just asking because i need to save money afer buying everything for my small synagogue including some stuff of mine- tallit, tefillin, kippah, tallit katan and for the synagogue sefer torah, siddurs, kippahs ect. so the only thing i need is the mezuzah scroll to put on the entrance so please. 10points for telling me if the megillah has to be kosher?
If you have bought a kosher Torah (which at the minimum is $10,000), then the $30 for a mezuzah scroll is hardly an expense! If the scroll is not kosher, it is a worthless piece of paper and a desecration of G-d’s name to pretend it is a kosher one!
Note: With a mezuzah the covering is completely immaterial and can be anything at all- from just a clingwrap cover around the scroll to an elaborate cover made form precious metals. It is meaningless and only serves as a cover for the scroll which is the Mezuzah! As for the scroll, it has to be made from vellum, handwritten by a scribe in a specific handwriting in a specific ink. Since the materials cost more than a dollar, anfdthe scribe needs money to earn a living, no mezuzah scroll which is Kosher will cost only a dollar. What is selling for cheap on e-Bay are NON-kosher mezuzah scrols which those selling are just trying to cover some of the costs of the materials in making them- and even then they are asking for less than cost since there is absolutely nothing one can do with am unkosher mezuzah aside from using it for teaching purposes as to how one is not written!
